state of sekrit's fanfic life, summer 2014

I did this last year and found it useful for me. Basically, what am I currently working on? Well.

Craig/Clyde fic. I think I started writing this as a response to SOT, because I was interested in how stuff went down with Craig and Clyde there. In that way it’s sort of a response to canon like how L&K was a response to Mysterion. To be honest this is basically a will they/won’t they fic and guess what, they do, so it’s rather short on plot. I hope that finding out how they do is interesting at least. Like everything I write there’s a S/K subplot, but mostly I’m using this to really think about Craig, okay, he’s a very important character. This fic’s not very good, don’t get excited.

RIAT prequel. Ostensibly for julads, so I feel bad about bouncing this to work on the above story, but as this is something it’s taken me a long time to write with a healthy amount of research about something with which I’m not immediately familiar (namely, the academic culture of Oxford in the mid-late 1960s) I’d rather make it sound legitimate than just dash it off to finish it. I feel bad that much of the stuff on this list doesn’t have a whole lot of plot but in this case I do have a relatively concrete idea about what the characters want and where they’re going. Since RIAT is a thing (thought admittedly not a popular thing) there is some pointlessness in this fic, as you might as well know if you’re interested that Stan and Kyle don’t get together at the end of the fic or anything like that, so a lot of the will they/won’t they that gives a fic like this (about pining, I mean, at its core) its weight is automatically negligible. At the same time it’s also about the cultural and sexual mores of postwar Britain right at the moment when the 1960s counterculture forces many to step out of repression and into the climate of sexual liberation. In this dumb timeline this coincides with the characters ending their educations and moving into “adult” society. So that’s my next thing after I finish the C/C fic. Honestly of all the things in this post, this fic is probably the only item of discernible quality! Except for Vikings, of course, see below.

70s fic. I have not done much work on this in the past year, though I have advanced it a bit. It’s still at about 100k and I still plan to finish it, seriously edit it, and post it. The main reason I haven’t worked on it in a while is that the vast majority of my attention since the last time this was my main focus went to finishing last year’s big bang and finishing the eighth chapter of RIAT. Part of why I’m not bothered by taking so long is that the story’s not especially good; it’s fun to write and a lot of it is gratifying, but the plot is essentially “Stan and Kyle have gay sex in the 1970s” which sounds fun but I think 110+k of that isn’t actually going to result in a fic many people like.

FTM Kyle 3. Nervous to work on this at all because honestly it’s not super great or super compelling. I was very proud of the first two parts and I’m not sure I can close this thing out with any kind of skill. The conceit of the whole thing is ridiculous; I’ve never felt comfortable with the idea and had locked the original fic so it was friends-only, but then I got positive feedback on it and was encouraged to unlock it for all to enjoy. Then the follow-up didn’t get a lot of comments and what comments I did get on it seemed to say that it wasn’t as good as the first part. So basically I have written a lot of this and I think as a story (you know, about the arc of Kyle’s and Stan’s lives) is incomplete – but, I’m afraid of doing a bad job and/or ruining what I’ve already written, and/or pissing people off. Hard life, friends.

~

On the docket:
RIAT 9. Since it took me two years to finish and post the last chapter surely I can wait another two years to post the next chapter!

SOT AU. I’m very very excited to write this, though I also assume no one’s excited about the game anymore and I lost my good window. Anyway, it’s an AU set in the world of the game, Zaron or whatever. A great human/elf war has been raging for a while to the point where Cartman and Kyle are both getting kind of desperate to bring the fighting to a close. It would take something crazy for either of them to concede, though, which leaves a dearth of options. Just so you know I plan on incorporating mpreg into this. I mean, it’s a game with a huge magic element, so that’s not so weird? she wrote, trying to justify it.

Vikings. I have written about this before. Basically there’s a blood feud, etc. Icelandic saga language and so on.

TA fic. Stan is Kyle’s TA in an AU setting where they don’t know each other.

Kenny/Cartman. One day I shall finish this, my magnum opus. This is apparently the only non-AU on this list besides Craig/Clyde; how sad is that?

Purim fic. I started writing this and it’s funny but it admittedly made more sense back around Purim. Seriously, look up the story of Purim and tell me a South Park Purim AU isn’t basically perfect.

Halloween fic. Given the speed at which I write I am going to have drop some other project from the list up there in order to have this done by the end of the year, let alone October 31, 2014.

last year’s list: updates

FTM Kyle #2 – posted it here

RIAT ch. 8 – posted it here (!!!)

70s fic – see above

Everything I rated “Enthusiastic to finish” – currently above!

"St. Rosa and the Swallows, or, Notes on Camp" – posted it here as a scrap

Love Boat (With Men) – was never something I meant to finish, though I recently reread the first three chapters and was like, jesus christ, this story is actually pretty decently written

Butters/Craig fic – nothing doing

Physiotherapy – still convinced this is a great idea, but with a million other things to write I don’t know that I’ll ever circle back round to it, even as I refuse to let go of the concept

maritime AU – now part of Halloween fic, above

Kyle is drag queen – someone else should write this so I can read it

Kyle is a mermaid – not going to happen, though negniahn makes some quality mermaid Kyle art

I understand better than most the desire (need? compulsion?) to research before writing. (In fact, I'm taking a class on Pittsburgh this summer for this very reason, though at this point, it may just be serving as an excuse for me to further procrastinate.) So by all means, do take your time with the RIAT prequel! Academic culture of Oxford in the mid-late 1960s sounds fascinating, and I'm looking forward to seeing how you integrate your learnings into your writing. Also, it cracks me up that you say "its weight is automatically negligible", followed by saying it's about "the cultural and sexual mores of postwar Britain right at the moment when the 1960s counterculture forces many to step out of repression and into the climate of sexual liberation." That's refined meatiness in my book, much more than a lovey-dovey romantic ending, which isn't very RIAT anyway.

I don't know what I am doing or why I am doing it, but I mostly feel bad about my inability to do anything to demonstrate my appreciation for your interest in SP fanfic. I wish I could draw so I could draw fan art for your fic, or that I were just quicker about doing things in general.

I suppose it depends on the execution, which I hope I can pull off mostly because I want to give you something you'll enjoy reading. But generally in terms of the character arc, I have criticized other peoples' fic (never yours!) for telling a small story about two characters getting together in a scope that doesn't necessarily fit that story (eg. a 200k-word clusterfuck) and like, in a sense this is the same deal, because unless there is a specific plot (gay British 1960s Stan and Kyle solve the mystery of the creaky clocktower?) the dynamics of "two character you already know don't get together ... don't get together" isn't terribly exciting. And while it's true that the late 1960s were a big time for gay liberation and, indeed, progressive causes, it's not like people don't know this or that it's a story worth telling in a fucking S/K fanfic. You know what's a good analogy maybe? One of the major criticisms of the Star Wars prequel trilogy is that it's essentially telling the story of how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. But if you're seen Episodes IV-VI you already know what's up with Darth Vader so why is someone telling me this story? And it's the exact same with this RIAT prequel, except I will make slightly more than the $1.56 billion (adjusted for inflation) that those three films did because let's get real historical AU fanfics usually bring home the bacon.

I continue to refuse to believe that I won't love the 70s fic. I just have a FEELING and I know you'll tell me I'm wrong, but...

Very excited about the RIAT prequel. UGH I just want to see Kyle in his "prime"/also at his lowest when he's with Cartman. And poor Stan longing for him. And is Bradley alive in this? Anyway, I can't wait.

The 1st part of FTM Kyle is my second favorite thing that you've ever written, the 2nd part definitely felt like a middlepoint, and I like the pregnancy angle a lot for the 3rd (of course) so I'm very excited to see the conclusion for that, although I can understand your anxiety about the subject matter and also that 'living up' to the good work you've already done feeling is something I get after a good start/reception, too. But fwiw I think you handled it incredibly well.

I really hope you do write that Kenny/Cartman someday, oh man. I feel like you would nail them the same way you nailed Kenny/Clyde and Kenny's sort of ancillary presence in S/K's life in the Kenny/Craig story. And I'll never forget the brief but amazing appearance bearded ex father in law coveting Kenny. And Kenny's pathetic background presence was really strong in terms of the atmosphere of Fake Hipsters.

And there was one story you did, I think it was an S/K story, where there's a weird moment of tension between Cartman and Kenny just as high school is ending, I believe? They're in Kenny's house and they snap at each other and it seems like Kenny is hurt by Cartman - what the hell am I thinking of? I read this a while ago but I wanted to know more. You do Kenny very well!

I think you will enjoy some aspects of 70s fic (delightful 70s pubes for example) but it's just not looking like a well-constructed story. I mean it's the height of the Trader Vic's craze, so that's a thing, but Stan and Kyle can only have tiki drinks so many times.

Yeah, I don't think university is really Kyle's prime, or Stan's prime. It is Cartman's prime! Unfortunately he feels like he's been treated unfairly, and he's not wrong, so he turns around and treats Kyle like shit. Bradley is alive, though he's not a huge character, especially since Stan and Kyle kind of think he's a drip.

If nothing else I'll post what I have of Kenny/Cartman! I do like Kenny floating around them like a ghost, or something, "boo, you guys," etc. I always like your description of him in the Hawaiiverse where he sort of wants to, like, get in on S/K's family and they're like "um" and really not interested in indulging him all the time. (Now I'm remembering Kyle being like "did you go back in time to when you were negative two years old and have sex with Mrs. McCormick making you Kevin's father? No? So he's not your responsibility" -- that was just such a great, over-the-top way for Kyle to be like "honestly fuck these people," very in-character.)

You're thinking of Catilinarian Orations, a fic whose summary is "One morning, Kyle wakes up with a vagina. LOL! Poor Kyle." I used to think it was the best thing I'd ever written; then I went back and reread it a couple of years ago and was like "yikes, this is not very good." I haven't looked at it again since then, though thinking about it now it makes me wistful for the time when I was able to write a complete stand-alone story in under 10k.

I'm really invested in the idea of a 70s fic.

Also, your Kenny/Cartman fic. Your magnum opus, eh? That makes me all tingly inside. I've always had a secret soft spot for that pairing and have always wanted more of it.

That 70s fic is a piping-hot mess, okay, it's literally just 100k of Stan and Kyle being like "facial hair in this decade is insane" "at least I'm high of quaaludes" "ya." Then it goes into the future and just, what am I doing. Stay tuned.

I really like the idea of Cartman/Kenny! formerdinosaur has written some of good quality but there's not really enough. This isn't my magnum opus, it's relatively short and stupid, but I've been working on it for way too long. Oops.

One of my favorite SP fics, even to this day, is Lance Ruhiru's "Monsters Among Us." That was one of the best executions of a Cartman/Kenny pairing, and it's just so beautifully written.

Thanks for the rec. I'm going to check out their stuff! Exciting!

Mankind needs more long stories about boys being fascinated by an era's facial hair. I mean, obviously.
